Poisonous Exhaust

Exhaust service is much more complicated these days. In fact the Federal Government has mandated the use of the catalytic converter and an on-board Emission Control Computer. The government has imposed on manufacturers to come up with more sophisticated ways to comply with environmental regulations.

Hi Tech Computer control emission devices are now a major part of the exhaust system. Because it is so sophisticated the manufacturer of your vehicle has recommended that you have your vehicle inspected by a qualified technician regularly. At Total Care Auto we can do just that.

If your check engine light is on or flashing, you need to have your car inspected promptly. It is possible that there is an emission related problem. You may have an exhaust or emission problem if your car is difficult to start, runs rough or if it smocks.

Starting at the top of the exhaust system is the exhaust manifold. This is the part which is attached to the engine and collects the exhaust from the cylinders and directs it into the exhaust pipe. The exhaust gaskets help seal the connections with the manifold and various other joints along the way. If the manifold is cracked or loosened or the gasket is leaking, dangerous gases can escape into the passenger compartment where you ride.

Carbon monoxide can be deadly, so it is very important that your exhaust system does not leak. The exhaust pipe connects the various components. It can rust or be damaged by rocks and needs to be inspected periodically.

The catalytic converter is another important component in the exhaust system. This part looks like a muffler. It converts chemicals that are dangerous to your health and the environment into harmless carbon dioxide and water. It does not require any maintenance itself but eventually they wear out.

The main function of the muffler is to quieten engine noise either by absorbing or baffling it.  You can actually customise your car's sound with different mufflers. When rusted or road damaged a muffler can leak carbon monoxide which is a deadly gas. Urgent replacement is recommended.

The exhaust system is attached to the car or by a series of hangers and clamps. These fasteners hold the system in place and when fasteners come loose or break, hot exhaust components can touch and melt wires, hoses and fuel lines.

The tailpipe is the final outlet in the exhaust system. This can be either plain or flashy, depending on personal selection, as its function is mainly cosmetic.

Don’t forget the oxygen sensor; this is a small component which senses how much oxygen content is in the exhaust gases so that the engine control computer can adjust the air fuel mixture. This enables the burning of the mixture as completely as possible thereby keeping the car operating more efficiently.

The exhaust system contains a mixture of plain old pipes and Hi Tech Computer components. It impacts everything from life and death safety, due to exhaust leaks, to fine tuning the sound of your vehicle.

At Total Care Auto we are aware of how important it is for you that your vehicle is both sounding great and functioning safely. Consequently we include an inspection of the exhaust system with our service routine.
